Is Skadar Lake Safe? Everything to Know Before You Go
The realistic risks (mostly small) and how to avoid them on a Skadar Lake trip.
Skadar Lake is one of the safest travel destinations in southern Europe. Crime is essentially zero. The real risks are dumb ones — sunburn, dehydration, ignoring a wind forecast.
On the water
Weather can change quickly. Trust the skipper — if they cancel or delay, there’s a reason. Life jackets are provided on all licensed boats. Kids should wear them the whole time.
Swimming
The lake is safe to swim. No currents, no dangerous wildlife. The bottom near shore is silty; wear water shoes. Don’t swim alone away from a boat or a beach.
Sun and heat
The biggest actual risk. July midday sun over open water is brutal. Long sleeves, hat, water, avoid 12:00–15:00 on the lake.
Driving
Roads are generally good. Mountain roads (Lovćen, above Rijeka Crnojevića) are narrow — take them slowly and never at night in rain. Speed limits are enforced by police, especially near villages.
Wildlife
There are snakes in the hills including the horn-nosed viper. You will almost certainly never see one. Watch where you put your hands on rocky trails.
