Best Time for a Lake Skadar Boat Tour: Weather, Seasons and Birds

The quick answer

If I could only pick one window: late May to early July. Warm enough to swim, water lilies in bloom, birds still very active, tours running full schedule, and the brutal midday heat hasn't arrived.

Runner-up: September. The lake empties of crowds, the water is still warm, and the light gets softer by the day.

Spring (April, May)

Best for: birds, low crowds, cool weather.

Air temperatures 15–22°C, water still cool (16–19°C — swimming possible but chilly). Pelicans are nesting, herons everywhere, cormorants diving. Rain showers pass through — bring a light jacket.

Fewer operators are running full schedules; the ones that do have space. Prices are the same as summer but you're often the only boat in the bay.

Early summer (June)

Best for: water lilies, everything else.

The white water lilies bloom across huge stretches of the lake — impossible to describe, worth planning around. Air 24–28°C, water 22–24°C, perfect for swimming.

This is my favourite month on the lake and I think most operators would agree. Book 2 weeks ahead for private tours.

High summer (July, August)

Best for: warm swimming, family holidays, sunset tours.

Air 30–36°C, water 25–28°C. Midday on the water is genuinely hot — bring a hat, long sleeves, more water than you think.

The trick is to go early (7–10am) or late (5–8pm). Sunset tours are magical in this season. Book 2–3 weeks ahead for anything private.

Early autumn (September, early October)

Best for: solitude, warm-still-not-hot, photography.

Air 22–28°C, water still 23–25°C in September. The crowds go home, the light softens, and the lake feels like it belongs to you again.

Personally: my second-favourite window, and the one I recommend to anyone who has flexibility.

Late autumn (late October, November)

Best for: birds again, misty mornings, moody photography.

Air 12–20°C, water cooling to 16–19°C. Migratory birds return. Morning mists on the lake are beautiful but boats often wait for them to lift.

Fewer operators run — call ahead. Prices sometimes drop 10–20%.

Winter (December to March)

Most operators pause. A few private skippers run trips on request in dry, clear weather — usually short, usually with a wooden boat. Air can drop to freezing, water is around 8–10°C, and there's no swimming.

The lake in winter is beautiful and empty, but it's a niche visit. If you're coming this time of year, contact skippers in advance and be flexible with dates.

Best time of day, whatever the month

Two golden windows, every day of the year:

• Early morning (30 min after sunrise to ~10am): coolest, glassiest, best for wildlife and photography.
• Late afternoon into sunset: warm side light, warm still air, almost no other boats.
