Best Time to Visit Skadar Lake (Month-by-Month)
The honest month-by-month rundown from someone who lives here — including the two windows that are objectively the best.

The lake is very different in April than in August. If you have flexibility on dates, use it. Here’s what each month is actually like.
January – February
Cold, often rainy, occasionally magical. Water levels are highest, so the shallows spread far into the fields around Virpazar. Birdlife is quiet but not gone. Most boat operators are closed; a couple run on request. Restaurants: some closed, one or two open.
March
The shoulder wakes up. Migratory birds start returning. Temperatures 8–15°C. Not yet good for swimming. The first tours restart mid-month. Cheap, quiet, atmospheric.
April – May
One of the two best windows. Spring bird migration is spectacular. Weather is mild (15–22°C). Everything green. Tours running, no crowds. If you’re a birder, come now.
June
Water lilies bloom — the classic Skadar Lake image. Temperatures climb to 25–30°C. The lake starts to warm up for swimming. Still not properly crowded. My favourite month.
July – August
High season. Hot (30–35°C, occasionally more). Swimming is glorious. Boats and restaurants full. Parking difficult. Book in advance for everything. Morning and sunset tours are best; midday is too hot to enjoy.
September
The other best window. Water is warm, air is 22–28°C, crowds thin dramatically after the 15th. Grape harvest in the Crmnica villages above the lake. If I had to pick one month for a first visit, this is it.
October
Autumn colours arrive, migratory birds pass through again. Weather variable but often stunning. Boat tours running until mid-month, then thinning out. Very cheap.
November – December
Off-season. Grey, wet, quiet. A couple of operators run bespoke tours. Restaurants operate on winter schedules. If you love empty places and don’t need to swim, it’s beautiful in its own way.
