Where to Eat in Virpazar: A Local’s Restaurant Guide

The honest ranking of every restaurant in Virpazar, including the ones I actually eat at.

Virpazar village
Stone bridge and old houses in Virpazar village

Virpazar has maybe eight restaurants for a village of three hundred, which tells you how much it lives off the lake. The food here is genuinely good if you know where to sit. Skip the pizzeria on the square, always sit outside if the weather lets you, and order fish.

Konoba Badanj

This is where I take my own family. Family-run, stone walls, wood-fired grill, terrace under a grape vine. The signature is grilled carp (šaran), but the smoked eel is legendary and the riblja čorba (fish stew) is what I order when it’s raining. Mains €12–18, half a litre of house red €6.

Restoran Pelikan

The classic Virpazar terrace overlooking the water. Bigger, more polished than Badanj, service can be leisurely in season (that’s a feature). Try the ukljeva — small lake fish deep-fried like whitebait, eaten whole with lemon. Mains €12–20.

Konoba Danilov Grad

Just over the bridge, quieter, no view. Consistent food, honest prices, and the owner will bring you rakija whether you ordered it or not. Good for a leisurely late lunch.

The market and the coffee

The village has one proper morning café by the bridge — espresso, macchiato, no oat milk, thank you. There’s a small shop on the main street for water, wine and snacks to take on a boat.

What to order

Fresh lake fish grilled whole. Ukljeva (fried small fish). Riblja čorba. Njeguški pršut and cheese from the mountain villages. A tomato salad with white cheese. Krofne (doughnuts) if the bakery has them.

For drinks: Vranac (dry red) or Krstač (crisp white) from the Crmnica hills — the wine region literally starts on the ridge above Virpazar.

What to skip

The pizza on the square. The all-you-can-eat buffet that appears in July. Any place with photographs of the food on the menu.
