Skadar Lake has been fished for a thousand years. The stone smokehouses along the shore are still in use. If you have any interest in fishing, a morning out with a local fisherman is one of the most authentic experiences the lake offers.
What lives in the water
Carp (šaran), bleak (ukljeva — the small silver fish you see fried in every restaurant), eel (jegulja), pike, chub, and the endemic Skadar sardine. The lake is genuinely productive; commercial fishing continues today under strict quotas.
Traditional methods
Nets set at dusk, hauled at dawn. Long lines for larger fish. Small traps for eels. The wooden čun is the fishing boat of choice because it slips silently over the shallows.
Going out with a local
Several fishermen in Virpazar and Poseljani take guests along on early-morning trips. You pay for the boat and the time. In exchange you help pull the nets, learn how they’re set, and usually take some of the catch to a local restaurant to be cooked for lunch.
This is not a fishing charter in the American sense. It’s a working morning with a working fisherman. Book through a Virpazar boat operator and be specific about what you want.
Recreational fishing
You need a permit. The national park sells them; ask at the visitor centre in Virpazar or through your accommodation. Fly-fishing is possible along the river feeders in spring.
