Virpazar is the main starting point for boat tours on Lake Skadar, and there are more options leaving from the pier than any first-time visitor expects. I live in the village half the year, and this is the guide I wish existed the first time I tried to book.

The four tour types leaving Virpazar
Almost every boat trip advertised in Virpazar falls into one of four categories. Once you know which one fits your day, choosing an operator is easy.
- Group tour (mid-size boat, ~10–14 people) — 2–3 hours, fixed route, cheapest option.
- Traditional wooden boat (čun) — 2–4 hours, slow, quiet, most photogenic. Small groups (up to 6).
- Private sport boat — 2h sunset, half day or full day. Fastest, most flexible, reaches the far side of the lake.
- Sunrise fishing / birdwatching — niche 3-hour trips at dawn, very small groups.

Prices at the Virpazar pier have been surprisingly stable. Rough guide for the current season:

- Sport boat, 2h sunset (private): €120–160 per boat

What's included (and what isn't)
Every tour I know includes life jackets, fuel and the skipper. Most include water and coffee. Almost none include lunch — you pay separately at a lakeside village restaurant (€15–25 per head for fresh carp, potatoes, salad and a glass of Vranac).
Swim stops are included on half-day and full-day tours; not on the 2-hour sunset. Bring a towel — the boats don't carry them.
How long each tour actually takes
The advertised duration is time on the water. Add 15–20 minutes for boarding, safety brief and getting out of the canal that leads from Virpazar to the open lake.
- Group tour: 2–3 hours on the water, back at the pier by lunchtime.
- Wooden boat, 4 hours: enough for Grmožur, the water lily fields (in June) and one short swim.
- Private half day: reaches Kom monastery, one swim bay, back for late lunch.
- Private full day: the entire lake — Kom, Beška, Karuč, a proper lunch stop, two swim bays.
Best time of day
Early morning (7–10am) is the coolest, the wildlife window and the best light for photography. The lake is often glassy. Sunset (roughly 6–8pm depending on month) is the most romantic — warm side light and almost no other boats.
Midday tours in July and August are hot on the water. Bring more water than you think, a hat, and a light long-sleeve shirt.
Best months
Late May to early July and all of September are the sweet spot: warm, but not brutal, wildlife active, water lilies blooming in June.
April and October are the best months for birdlife — pelicans, cormorants, herons. Cooler, lower light, fewer tours running.
July and August are still beautiful early in the morning and at sunset. Avoid midday.
November to March most operators pause; a few private skippers still run trips on request.
How far ahead to book
Private tours in July and August: 2–3 weeks ahead. The good skippers sell out.
