Skadar Lake Birdwatching: What to See and How to See It

The stars

Dalmatian pelican. Enormous, endangered, and the icon of the lake. A small breeding colony nests on the far side; a wider population fishes across the whole basin. Sightings are near-guaranteed on any half-day tour from Virpazar in season.

Pygmy cormorant. Sits on floating logs and reed stems in groups of ten or twenty. Fun to watch dive.

Glossy ibis. Iridescent dark plumage, curved bill — spectacular in low sun. Present spring to autumn.

Purple heron, night heron, squacco heron, little bittern. Herons of every kind stalk the reed edges.

Best hours

First 90 minutes after sunrise. This is not negotiable. Birdlife is active, the water is glass-flat, and you’ll photograph in soft light. A dedicated birdwatching tour starts around 06:30 in June.

Second best: last two hours before sunset, when birds come back to the reeds to roost.

Best months

April and May for spring migration and breeding activity. Late September and October for autumn migration. June through August you’ll still see everything, but the mid-day heat makes birds less active.

How to book a birdwatching-specific tour

Ask explicitly for a birdwatching route and an early departure. Standard tourist cruises visit different spots. A birdwatching skipper knows where the pelican colony is roosting this month (it moves), which reed island has the pygmy cormorants, and where the ibises are feeding.

Private tours are strongly recommended for birding — the skipper cuts the engine and lets you drift, which no group boat will do.

Kit

Binoculars — 8×42 or 10×42 is ideal. Camera with a telephoto (300mm minimum). Water. Hat. A cheap water-resistant bag for the boat spray. No bright clothing.
