Family Boat Tour on Skadar Lake: What Actually Works with Kids

The right tour, the right length, and the small tricks that turn a boat day into a family highlight instead of a meltdown.

I’ve taken kids on the lake — my own and other people’s. It goes brilliantly when you plan for it and badly when you don’t. Here’s what works.

Right tour for kids

A private half-day tour. Not a group cruise (they last too long, no swim stop, kids get bored). Not a full-day trip (too much boat, not enough variety). A private half-day (3–4 hours) with a swim stop and a monastery visit is the sweet spot.

Right time

Morning. Depart around 09:00. You’re back by 13:00, kids nap in the afternoon, everyone eats dinner in a good mood. Sunset tours look romantic on paper but by the end of one, small kids are cold and tired.

What to pack

Sunscreen — reapply on the boat.

Sun hat with a chin strap.

Long-sleeve UV shirt.

Change of clothes for after the swim.

Snacks — bread, cheese, fruit. The boat may have water but usually not kid snacks.

One quiet activity for the boring middle stretch — a book or an audio story.

Small tips

Let the older kid ‘drive’ for a minute. Every good skipper will offer.

Bring goggles for the swim stop — the lake is clean, they’ll enjoy looking underwater.

Ask about a shorter tour if you have kids under 4. Two hours is often plenty.

Any age with proper sun cover and a life jacket, but 4+ enjoy it most.

Are life jackets provided?+

Yes, always — including child sizes on any decent operator.

On sport boats yes (canopy). Wooden boats are open — pack extra sun cover.

Badanj and Pelikan both work — big terraces, room for kids to move.
