Romantic Boat Tour on Skadar Lake: The Two-Hour Version of a Perfect Evening

Private, sunset, quiet water, prosecco on board — how to plan the tour couples actually remember.

Two years ago a British guest proposed to his girlfriend on a small private boat off Grmožur island. I know because the skipper called me the next morning to say she’d said yes and asked if I could recommend a good restaurant for the celebration dinner. Skadar Lake is, weirdly, one of the great romantic settings in Europe. It’s just extremely under-marketed as one.

The exact tour

Private sport boat. Two hours. Departure 90 minutes before sunset. Route: from Virpazar out into the wide bay in front of Grmožur, anchor there for the golden hour, watch the sun drop behind the mountains, return via a slightly different route. €150 for the boat.

What to bring

Two glasses (or ask the skipper — they have them). A bottle of Montenegrin sparkling wine (€10 in any village shop) or a good Vranac. A light jacket for after sundown. A phone camera is fine. A proper camera is better.

Dinner after

Book Konoba Badanj for 21:00 in advance. Terrace under the grape vine, grilled fish, half a litre of house red, ends around 23:00. If you want somewhere quieter, Konoba Danilov Grad over the bridge.

If you’re proposing

Tell the skipper in advance. They will cut the engine at the right moment. They will not — I promise — say a word to your partner. And they usually won’t charge extra for staying an extra fifteen minutes on the water afterwards.
