The Best Montenegro Road Trip Itinerary (7 Days, With Skadar Lake)

Kotor, Budva, Skadar Lake, Cetinje, Durmitor — a realistic 7-day loop with actual driving times.

Montenegro travel
Winding coastal road above the Bay of Kotor

Montenegro is small — you can drive coast to mountain in three hours — and that makes it perfect for a first-time loop. This is the itinerary I send people who ask.

Day 1: Tivat → Kotor

Arrive Tivat, drive 20 minutes to Kotor. Walk the old town in the evening. Sleep in Kotor or Perast.

Day 2: Bay of Kotor

Morning boat around the bay to Our Lady of the Rocks. Afternoon climb up to San Giovanni fortress. Dinner in Perast.

Day 3: Kotor → Budva → Skadar Lake

Drive over Lovćen mountain via Cetinje (half day, spectacular). Continue to Virpazar. Sleep in Virpazar or nearby.

Day 4: Skadar Lake day

Full-day private boat tour of the lake. Sunset dinner in Virpazar.

Day 5: Wine and villages

E-bike day up into the Crmnica wine villages, or drive up to Rijeka Crnojevića for the postcard bend, then Cetinje for the palace museum.

Day 6: Skadar Lake → Durmitor

Long drive north (~4 hours) to Durmitor National Park. Sleep in Žabljak.

Day 7: Durmitor → Podgorica → home

Morning walk around Black Lake. Drive back to Podgorica airport (2h30). Fly out.

Variations

If you have 10 days, add Ulcinj (coast south, long sand beach, Albanian influence) and Ostrog Monastery (cliffside, dramatic).

If you have 5 days, skip Durmitor and stay two nights on the coast.

Häufige Fragen

Is 7 days enough for Montenegro?+

Enough for a great highlights loop. 10 days lets you slow down properly.

Do I need a 4x4?+

No. A small standard car is fine everywhere except one or two mountain tracks in Durmitor.

Best base for the lake portion?+

Virpazar — for boat access, restaurants and train connections.

Is the Lovćen road safe?+

Yes in dry weather during the day. Not in rain, not after dark.
