How to Get to Skadar Lake (from Anywhere in Montenegro)
Driving, training, bus, taxi — the fastest, cheapest and most scenic ways to reach Skadar Lake from every major town.
Skadar Lake is almost exactly in the middle of Montenegro, which sounds convenient and is. Nowhere in the country is more than three hours away. The only trick is which route to pick.
From Podgorica airport
35 minutes by car. Take the E762 south toward Bar; Virpazar is signposted. In a rental this is a totally straightforward drive on a mostly-empty road. Taxis are €35–45.
From Tivat airport
About 90 minutes. Either go via the Sozina tunnel (fastest, €2.50 toll) or over the mountain via Cetinje (slower, spectacular, don’t do it after dark or in the rain).
From Bar
40 minutes by car. But — and this is the underrated tip — the train from Bar to Virpazar takes 40 minutes, costs €2, and goes through beautiful tunnels and vineyards. If you’re staying on the coast without a car, this is a gorgeous day trip.
From Kotor
1 hour 30 via the Sozina tunnel. Longer via the mountain. Bus connections require a change in Podgorica, so if you don’t have a car, a private day-tour transfer is often easier.
From Budva
1 hour via the tunnel, 1 hour 15 over the mountain via Cetinje (which is a great route to combine with a Cetinje stop).
The scenic route
If you have a rental car and the time, drive from Kotor over Lovćen mountain to Cetinje, then down to Rijeka Crnojevića (with the famous viewpoint), then along the shore road to Virpazar. It takes half a day. It’s one of the best drives in Europe.
Public transport summary
Train from Bar or Podgorica stops at Virpazar station. From the station it’s a 5-minute walk to the pier. Buses on the Podgorica–Bar route also stop at Virpazar. There is no bus to Rijeka Crnojevića — you need a car or taxi.
